Cloud computing involves storing data and making programs accessible via the Internet instead of your computer’s hard drive.
There are many reasons why businesses should consider cloud computing. Among these reasons are increased profit, accessibility, collaboration and automatic software updates. Although cloud computing also excels in certain areas of security, including data loss due to damaged computers or hard drives, some have expressed concern over cloud security threats, such as cyber attacks. However, security in the cloud is becoming increasingly more reliable. In fact, trust in cloud security is now equal to that of on-premises applications.
Here are some interesting facts on recent changes to cloud security:
- 64.9% of IT Trusts the Cloud as Much or More Than On Premises Software. One potential reason for this is that cloud providers have heavily invested in security, even more so than the security implemented for on-premises applications. The belief that cloud security may not be as secure is one that is rapidly changing.
- Cyber Security Jobs On the Rise. From 2010 to 2014, cyber security jobs grew more than three times the rate of all jobs in the IT sector. In fact, cyber security jobs are expected to be one of the hottest jobs of the future given the salary premiums and better job security compared to other career options in IT.
- The Top Barrier to Making Data Secure Is A Lack of Security Professionals. Interestingly, it is not actually the technology itself that is a barrier to security but rather the trouble in finding skilled employees to take advantage of the security technology. However, with the number of cyber security jobs on the rise and the number of employees expected to fill these roles, cloud security is only to improve in the future.
- Companies with a CISO are More Prepared for Cyber Attack. One study showed that companies with a chief information security officer, who oversees information security, are more confident in their ability to fight against a cyber attack. This likely has something to do with the fact that they are more likely to have an incident response plan, which provides strategies on how they would respond in the event of such a threat.
